New website from Virginia Beach man puts hospital prices on display

Virginia Beach-based computer engineer Richard Callaghan has launched HospitalCost.com, a platform designed to make complex federal hospital pricing data accessible and usable for patients. 

The website compiles data from 17 federal sources to allow users to compare insurance rates, quality measures and out-of-pocket costs across 58 hospitals in Virginia and North Carolina. 

In Hampton Roads, the data reveals that prices at Sentara Health facilities are often nearly identical, limiting "price shopping leverage" compared to more competitive markets in Northern Virginia.

The strong executive and the founders’ misgivings
