New website from Virginia Beach man puts hospital prices on display |
Virginia Beach-based computer engineer Richard Callaghan has launched HospitalCost.com, a platform designed to make complex federal hospital pricing data accessible and usable for patients.
The website compiles data from 17 federal sources to allow users to compare insurance rates, quality measures and out-of-pocket costs across 58 hospitals in Virginia and North Carolina.
In Hampton Roads, the data reveals that prices at Sentara Health facilities are often nearly identical, limiting "price shopping leverage" compared to more competitive markets in Northern Virginia. |

The strong executive and the founders’ misgivings |
The country’s Founding Fathers broke from the tyrannical rule of King George III 250 years ago.
It was one step to declare independence, another to create the government of a new nation. Virginia delegates had a particular concern at the Constitutional Convention – a powerful executive.
Patrick Henry warned fellow Virginians that with the proposed new form of government – despite its checks and balances — might mean “your President may easily become a king.”
In the second story of our series, Our Unfinished Union, journalist Philip Shucet examines the Founders’ swirling debate that continues today: What are the powers and restraints of the U.S. presidency? |
